Budget planning can be the most challenging part of a window replacement project — it can even be downright daunting if one doesn’t know where to begin. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Alaska gets you started with your budget planning with a list of the factors that affect window replacement cost.

5 Factors That Affect Window Replacement Cost

  1. Window styles. Any window style can be installed onto any wall opening. This is especially true if you include custom replacement windows among your options. However, the per-unit cost varies between styles. Some styles are more complex to build than others because of moving parts and hardware.

  2. Number of windows being replaced. It goes without saying that more windows will correspondingly increase the project cost. However, if you are thinking of having all the windows in your home replaced over time, it may cost you more in terms of labor cost — not to mention that some window contractors offer discounts for bulk replacement projects.

  3. Off-the-shelf vs. custom windows. Pre-built or off-the-shelf replacement windows may shave some dollars off your budget, but consider the trade-offs: you’d be stuck with what’s available, which can make it difficult if you are looking for specific styles or want to match other windows in your home. Custom replacement windows, on the other hand, can be more expensive, but the flexibility they offer can offset the difference in cost.

  4. Frame materials and glass. A lot of technology goes into replacement windows, from insulated glass, which utilizes multiple panes to slow down thermal transfer, to low-maintenance frames, to factory-applied custom colors. The more advanced the windows are, the more costly they can be. However, consider features like energy efficiency, which can help you recoup the cost of window replacement down the line.

  5. Unexpected repairs. As with most types of home renovations, some problems — usually structural in nature — reveal themselves after the project has already started. Sometimes window installers find rot, damage — even installation mistakes committed by a previous contractor — after removing the old windows. Such issues will need to be fixed before the new windows can be installed, and as the repair costs wouldn’t be included in the original contract price, it will be added after the fact. Having a separate contingency budget that’s worth about 10% to 20% of the contract price can help keep your window replacement project on track. This is also a good practice for any other home improvement that you’re planning to do.

Our consultants at Renewal by Andersen® of Alaska can help you plan your window replacement project and ensure no surprises. If you’re worried about installing new windows in winter, don’t be. Winter can be the perfect time to replace your windows. Our Certified Master Installers are best-in-class and have perfected the winter installation process. They work quickly and efficiently, minimizing your home’s exposure to the harsh elements. There are many benefits to upgrading your home before warmer weather gets here; read on to learn what they are and learn more about our winter installation process.

Five benefits of a winter installation include:

1. Better protection from the elements.

Replacing windows and doors in the winter helps protect against harsh weather conditions. Winter storms often bring strong winds, snow, freezing temps, and other debris that can damage old or worn-out windows or your home. Modern models are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and conditions, so they’ll last longer and keep you safer.

2. Improved energy efficiency.

One of the main reasons to replace windows and doors in the winter is improved energy efficiency. If your windows are older or damaged, they may release heat from inside your home, leading to higher energy bills. Newer, more energy-efficient windows will help keep warm air in and cold air out, saving you money.

3. Reduced condensation and other moisture issues.

Another benefit is a reduction in condensation and other moisture issues. During cold weather, humidity levels drop, making installing new windows or doors easier without worrying about moisture build-up inside your home. This also helps prevent mold and mildew growth.

4. Greater scheduling availability.

Since installations can slow down during this season, you’ll have a better chance of scheduling your window or door replacement at the perfect time for you.

5. We’ve mastered winter installations.

With two Certified Master Installers working on the outside and inside of each window, our average installation time is about 5 minutes per window. Our installers work quickly and efficiently—never exposing your home to the harsh elements of winter. We seal off the room we’re working in so you don’t have to worry about heat escaping or the cold affecting your home and the people, pets, and plants inside it. Our process is fast, clean, and safe. Most projects are completed in as little as one day—giving you immediate satisfaction with beautiful new windows that improve the comfort of your home!

Our winter installation system makes it quick and easy. Here’s how it works:

  • Our Certified Master Installers seal off the room they’re working in, using zip walls to enclose the area. This keeps pets, plants, and people comfortable in the rest of the home. Zip walls also prevent heat loss and ensure your home will have minimal exposure to the elements.
  • We cover and protect floors and furnishings from foot traffic, construction debris, and the harsh winter elements.
  • Two installers work on your home’s outside and inside simultaneously.
  • The installers work on one window at a time, with each window being installed on average in as little as five minutes.
  • Each window is custom-manufactured to 1/8” of the opening so that installers can add additional insulation around the framework once in place, helping maximize energy efficiency.

According to the Department of Energy, space heating and cooling can account for about half of an average home’s annual utility expenses. Fortunately, you can stay comfortable while reducing energy costs by investing in energy-efficient replacement windows. In today’s blog post, Renewal by Andersen® of Alaska takes a look at how window replacement can help improve the energy efficiency of your home.

How New Windows Improve Home Energy Efficiency

Windows are part of your home’s insulated enclosure known as the energy envelope, which also includes the exterior walls and the roof. Under ideal conditions, the energy envelope should keep thermal transfer to a minimum, resulting in reduced heat loss during the heating seasons, and reduced heat gain during the cooling seasons. The lower workload that’s placed on the HVAC system, the lower the resulting energy bills will be.

Qualities of Energy-Efficient Windows

Our capable window installers and consultants can help you find the right energy-efficient windows for your home, or simply look for the ENERGY STAR® rating when buying new windows. If you are looking for specific features, here are some of the qualities that you should look for.

  • Insulation. Let’s start with the most important component: window glass. Insulated glass typically consists of two glass panels separated by a spacer. The gap between the interior and exterior surfaces acts as an insulating layer, and can be enhanced with an insulating gas fill. Look for the U-Factor, as indicated on its energy ratings label — the lower the U-Factor, the better the insulation.

  • SHGC. The solar heat gain coefficient measures how well the windows can resist heat gain from direct sunlight. The lower the SHGC value (also found on the energy ratings label), the less you’ll spend on cooling.

  • Installation. Poor installation can defeat even the best replacement windows on the market. This is why it’s important to choose a replacement window company that has a track record of quality installations and a limited warranty that includes installation or workmanship.

Before your window replacement begins, you’ll want to get a few things in order. While some of these steps can be completed in the hour leading up to the job, others require more time to prepare. Here’s a list of 12 steps to take:

  1. Before moving furniture and items, it’s a good idea to take a picture with your phone to remember where things go.
  2. Move all furniture and obstacles from around the window and/or door areas by 2-3 feet. If large items are near the window, protect them with drop cloths. Use furniture pads or blankets when moving items to prevent scratches and dents.
  3. Cut any branches or shrubs that are blocking access to a window or door.
  4. Removing window coverings such as curtains, blinds and shutters will help prevent damage during installation. If possible remove curtain rods from windows. If not, make sure to cover them to protect them from dust and debris.
  5. If you have picture frames or wall art on the same wall as the windows and doors, remove them. They may get damaged by vibrations.
  6. To keep things from getting damaged or broken, cover or remove decorative items, breakables, and plants. If it isn’t possible to move them out of the way completely, put them in drawers or closets so they’re out of sight.
  7. Be sure to remove any electrical cords that run through the area being worked on, and create a clear path for traffic in and out of your home during installation.
  8. Disconnect any alarms that are connected to your windows or doors.
  9. Make sure that the area surrounding the window is clean so that dust, pollen and dirt won’t mix with the caulk or sealant.
  10. Cover your floors with drop cloths to protect them from all the dust.
  11. Close off rooms where work will be taking place so that dust doesn’t get into other parts of your home.
  12. Keep children and pets out of the way for their safety.

To discuss your window replacement options, give us a call or fill out our contact form to schedule a consultation. We’re proud to serve Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, Fairbanks, the Kenai Peninsula, and Juno.

There are several reasons why people think summer is the best time of year to replace their windows, but there are also some cons. If you’re thinking about replacing your windows, read on to see if summer is the right season for you.

PROS

  • THE WEATHER. Typical weather conditions in summer allow for a higher quality installation. Because there’s less damp and no rain or snow, a summer installation also means a cleaner house.
  • UV PROTECTION. The sun shines brighter during these months, which means that new windows will be more efficient at blocking UV rays from entering your home. This will help prevent fading of carpets, furniture and other items and protect you and your family.
  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY. If you want to save money on energy bills each month then replacing old windows with new energy efficient ones should be high on your list of priorities. Energy efficient windows will reduce cooling costs in summer and heating costs in winter.
  • FASTER INSTALL. More daylight hours and better weather means faster completion of the install. Installation is less likely to interfere with daily routines and children’s schedules like school.
  • COLD WEATHER READY. Waiting until fall or winter to replace windows means having to live with drafty windows through those seasons until your new windows are in.
  • PERFECT FOR SEALANTS AND CAULKING. Mid temperatures and warm, dry weather are what you want for sealants and caulking to apply and dry their best. However, extreme temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit will prevent caulking from curing well.

CONS

  • EXTREME HEAT. On days of extreme heat, installers can’t work during the afternoon. That may be rare in Alaskan summers, but it can happen which will mean prolonging the length of your installation. The same applies for homeowners as well. It’s not the best idea to paint or stain window trim when the sun’s at its peak. You’ll have to leave it to the morning or evening.
  • YOUR HOUSE CAN HEAT UP. But you can take steps to cool your home down. If you’re having windows installed and heat from the sun is entering the room where installation is taking place, you can close the door to that room to keep the rest of your house cool.
  • FOREST FIRE SMOKE. While not frequent, forest fires do happen. If you’re having your windows replaced during smoky conditions, doing the above will help prevent smoke from entering your home.
  • BUSY SEASON. Summer is peak home renovation time. You may want to consider scheduling an install for the milder months of fall and spring to give you the advantage of increased installation availability.
  • BUGS. Of course, removing windows gives insects and mosquitoes the chance to enter your home. This is especially true if you live near trees, shrubs, or water sources where they tend to congregate. But burning insect coils or candles or setting up an insect trap in the room should help keep them at bay.

Regardless of which time of year works best for you, know that Renewal by Andersen installers are Certified Master Installers with years of experience who take pride in setting the highest standard in the market. To discuss your window replacement options, give us a call or fill out our contact form to schedule a consultation. There are many types of remodeling and maintenance projects that can be done through DIY, with varying levels of success. Window replacement is not among these projects, and in today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Alaska discusses the reasons why you should leave window replacement to professionals.

window replacement performed by renewal by andersen installers

Professional Results

The term “professional,” in terms of workmanship, is synonymous with quality. If you only need one reason why you should have your windows replaced by professionals, this is it. Window replacement is an intricate process that requires skills that can only be obtained through hands-on training, not through watching online videos. These skills also give professionals the ability to make sure that small yet crucial details, like proper alignment and caulk application, are done correctly.

Access to Better Products

Taking the DIY route means you’re limited to off-the-shelf replacements or online orders that may or may get damaged during shipping or not matching what was described. On the other hand, professionals have access to exclusive products, and, in our case, custom replacement windows. This gives you more control over every aspect of the window: shape, style, size, and finishes.

Zero Safety Risks

DIY window installment can be dangerous if you need to replace upper-story windows. In fact, anything that involves climbing exterior walls presents this risk. Fortunately, professionals like us have safety training and equipment that helps eliminate such risks.

Savings on Installation Cost

It may sound counterintuitive since savings are supposed to be one of the pros of DIY installation. However, if you don’t usually do your own home improvement projects, you will need to purchase additional equipment, such as caulk gun, power drill and spirit level, as well as safety gear. There’s also the matter of installation mistakes: you will have to cover the cost of corrections out of your own pocket. Comparatively, professional window installers have all the tools and equipment needed for the job and have the workmanship warranty in case of installation mistakes.

Renewal by Andersen of Alaska is your leading provider of replacement windows. Give us a call or visit our website here. We serve customers in Anchorage, AK, as well as surrounding communities including Kenai Peninsula, The Valley, and Fairbanks.
